October

1 One reason is that it is the month of my birthday, and who doesn’t like their birthday? It’s the day that marks the anniversary of your birth, and reminds you that you’re 2 going to get any younger.  Your birthday is also the day that you get free cake and presents, and the only day that is all about you.

Another reason I love October is because of Halloween. Halloween is the best holiday because people get to dress up in costumes and pretend to be someone they aren’t. Kids enjoy free candy, teenagers enjoy loud parties, and adults get the satisfaction of spending their money on candy to give out. Though, one can never outgrow candy, no matter their age.

Also, I love October because it is in the fall. Fall means the beginning of a new school year, a new setting, and new people to meet. Fall means football season, tailgates, pep-rallies, and cheerleading. Since I’m a cheerleader, it makes sense for October to be one of my favorite months. 3

Since October is in the middle of fall, the weather is neither too hot, nor too cold.  It’s the perfect weather for jeans and a t-shirt. The leaves are still on the trees, and they’re all different shades of yellows, reds, and browns. Not one tree looks the same either, it’s a nice change from the sea of green we see in the spring and summer.

1. Periodic Sentence- Pulls in the reader to find out why I love October

2. Emphasis – “never” has emphasis and sarcasm because you will never get younger

3. Rhythm – this sentence has rhythm and also rhymes

  1. My favorite month is October for a number of reasons.
  2. never
  3. October reminds me of friends and food, both of which put me in a good mood.

I Hate Favorites

Being the extremely indecisive person that I am, picking a favorite color has never been an easy thing for me to answer or choose.  I can remember when I was young I was super girly, and loved anything and everything pink.  Thankfully I grew out of that “girly princess” phase and now I don’t like the pink at all.  I can never decide on what my favorite color is, because my “favorites” change with my mood……I guess.1

I know it sounds weird, but if it’s rainy and dark out and I was asked, I would probably answer purple, blue, or black.  But if they asked me on a warm sunny day I would say orange, white, blue, yellow, red, light purple, teal, coral, gold,  etc.2   However clothes wise, I LOVE neutral colors and hate wearing bright colors.  I love the simplicity of tan, blue, gray, black and white, because you can accessorize so easily with them.  Plus, if I was ever in the mood for a pop of color I could add bright red lipstick, or a pastel colored necklace.  I think picking a favorite is also hard for me because there are also different SHADES of colors.  How can you only like ONE 3 with so many out there? It’s all too much for me.

All over my favorite color(s) depend on the situation I’m in, or what I’m doing.  As you have read, once again, I’m very indecisive so Im just going to end saying that I like all the colors in different situations/moods……I guess.

  1. Rhythm: I repeatedly add the words “I guess after a paused to show the indesivness but also give a natural speaking rhythm.  As if i was actually talking and analyzing what I previously said.
  2.  Periodic Sentence: I extend the number of colors I would chose to show how many I would pick, which gives the reader the feeling of indecisiveness once again.
  3. Nuclear Emphasis: I emphasize the words SHADES and ONE to show emphasize some of the reasons why I can’t pick a favorite color.

Blue

Blue
If you asked me right now what my favorite color was I would have to say hands down blue. But although deep down in my heart blue has always been my favorite color, I still live with the guilt of knowing I used to lie and say it was red. When I was about 4 years old I met the little boy across the street from me that happened to be the same age. He was my first friend and from that point on we were best friends. So after being friends with him for a couple of weeks or months he finally admitted that his favorite color was blue and asked me what mine was. I felt guilty copying what he just said and at the time we were in an imaginary war so I had to lie. 1. Off the top of my head I lied to my friend and said my favorite color was red. It may have been the biggest mistake of my child hood. I went to kindergarten the next year and eventually the entire class was asked their favorite colors. 2. I had my best friend in the class and once again I lied to him, lied to the class, and lied to myself, saying my favorite color was red. I lived this childish fantasy until about middle school where I finally was able to let out my true feelings for the color blue. Blue is peaceful and calming. 3. Blue makes me feel, makes me think, makes me believe that everything will be ok. When you look at the sky or sea all you can see is just miles of blue covering the entire landscape. I like that feeling. The feeling of being completely absorbed by something, the feeling that no matter how big any one person may be, there are still things like the sky and sea that will always overpower any one human being.

1. Rhythm- This sentence has rhythm and a rhyme scheme which makes it fun to read and flow nicely in the essay.
2. Nuclear Emphasis- In this sentence I break it up so that the final thing said is my favorite color is red. This adds emphasis to the fact that I lied about my favorite color.
3. Periodic Sentence- In this sentence I delay the final clause with three separate phrases, this helps to emphasize my point at the end of the sentence because it uses three different phrases to describe it.

June should be every senior’s favorite month

My favorite month had always been December, for obvious reasons, but just incase you were unaware, it’s my birth month. I was born on December 3rd, 1993 and for 17 years of my life, it was my most favorite month. I mean who wouldn’t love their birthday month? Getting presents and cake and spending time with your family. I loved the snow white Christmas and holiday cheer. Well senior year definitely changed that. Now the only month I can’t wait for is June, June 10th to be exact. Why you ask? Because it’s official Graduation day! The day every senior has been waitting for from the start. Everything will be just wonderful on that day; the weather, everyone’s clothes, all the girl’s make up and hair, and the feeling of getting our hands on that high school diploma acknowledging the advancement to our next step in life, college. This certificate of achievement is what every individual in the senior class has been working towards for all four years of their high school life. The summer vacation in June will also give all the more reasons to celebrate before going off to VCU, for me. Personally, I had the best experience over Preview day at Virginia Commonwealth University. I got a chance to meet new people, and experience the International Festival VCU was hosting with them too. College is definitely the main thing on my min, I can’t wait!

My Favorite Number

Five, just say it, Five, it clings off the tongue with such finesse that it can hardly be associated with the coldness of Math its self. It was a springs day, the flowers were booming and the sun was shining, the warmth of the sun hit with a feeling of warmth and safety thorough the window as I was stuck in the cold lifeless school. Then I saw it, the number 5. My teacher added two of the biggest numbers I knew, 2 and 3 and then I popped out like a butter fly from a cocoon or a chick from its egg, it was simply a thing of beauty. After that five and I had a bond that couldn’t be broken, we were going to take over the world I thought (being 4 and thinking 5 is biggest possible number). This love survived even as I grew older and learned about even bigger numbers and more complex ways to find them. However, one day discovered a number that blew 5 out of the water. It was the platinum choice of numbers, the crème de l’crème, the apex in class and style, the number 64. Now this was a magical number. I has so much might by being so large, but not too large and it’s practice too. Now only does is it even so it’s simple to divide, but it also has this magic ability to be divided by 8 and make 8. Being 8 at the time, this blew my mind. For the past decade I have held my love for 64 but I fear our love is dying. Being in much more advanced math I’ve discovered much more magical numbers with even freakier tricks. Yet, I am hopeful. Like every great relationship out love will concur through the treachery of life and all its temptations. 64, I swear I wasn’t fooling around with 345.894.

my number 9

1….2…..3….4…..slowly with pauses is how we used to count numbers as young kids. There are tons of numbers to choice from as a favorite number, but as a child we pick our favorite number between 1-10.  As a child most of us were only able to count up to certain numbers and we stop and start the cycle of counting again. 1

In elementary school, it was my duty to find a favorite number. At first I wanted to be 3, simply because 3 is a lucky number. People advertised 3 to be this marvelous figure which I fell for. The shape of 3 was perfect; it looks like a heart connecting. 2   3 was known for the 3 stooges, the 3 wise man, the 3 musketeers, red white and blue. It was also in my favorite books, the three little pigs and everything was 3 in Goldilocks. Did I mention 3 appeared in one of my favorite movies Charlie’s Angel (3 angels). I stuck with 3 for a while bit, but I moved on to 4. I picked the number 4 to be my next favorite number, because it was my dad’s favorite. That didn’t last a very long time all.

Soon again I changed my number, this time for ever. My favorite became 9 as I was in the 3rd grade. I loved 9, because it was my older brother’s favorite number. My brother started playing soccer before I did and his jersey number was 9. When I myself started playing soccer, I always choose the number 9. You see my brother’s favorite soccer player was Ronaldo a famous brazilin player. 3

1)      Nuclear Emphasis- I used the word soon for my nuclear emphasis at the end of the first paragraph. I put it at the end of the first paragraph to make it sound dramatic.  “I need a number soon” or else I would not have a favorite number forever.

2)      Rhythm- For rhythm, I use the same rhythm pattern and pause for that sentence and the next sentence. This gives the reader a pause before the rest of the story.

3)      Periodic sentence- For periodic sentence, I put it at the very end of the essay. I put it at the end simply because I wanted to tell the readers that 9 was forever going to be my favorite number.

  1. As I entered the second grade, I knew I had to fine my own number soon.
  2. Lots of things came in sets of 3. This was the right number for me.
  3. I became comfortable with number 9, I wrote it every, it was my soccer jersey number, and give it a new identity, my number.

Kind of Blue

“Kind of Blue”

Is blue really the best color in the world?  Considering the planet is covered in two thirds of the color, I would think it would be an easy choice.  But, upon such a colorful topic, there are individuals on this big, blue planet who would jump to disagree with me.  And I, being a blue-blooded American and a believer in the first amendment, am happy to explore the merits of their interjections, as long as they let me speak my peace.

I may as well start out with a shock: I was once in love with the color red.  Immature and full of vigor, I connected with the destruction found in lava, and believed the myth that red cars are faster and sportier.1  I did not yet see harm in such a devilish choice.  But as I grew, I could not satisfy my hunger for something more.

Then, out of the blue, my tastes started shifting around the color wheel.  Torn between two steadfast opponents, I tried to compromise.  I tried to convince myself that I liked purple.  But under this facade of unity, red and blue were in continual conflict.  So I made my choice.

Emotionally, people can be considered scared and “yellow” or “red with envy”, but to be “blue” is not just mere sadness.  Blue is contemplation, expression of thought.  It makes a connection, down deep in your soul.2  It is no wonder that blue is the only color that inspired a whole genre of music.  For without the blues, we would never experience those touching moments created by the likes of B.B. King or Miles Davis.

You may argue with me until you are blue in the face, but you will see in my eyes that blue is the color for me.3  I have made my choice, and do not regret it.  So please join me, look off into the distance, and marvel at the beauty of a clear blue sky.4

  1. Periodic Sentence.  I rearranged this sentence from “I was immature and full of vigor, connecting with the destruction found in lava, and under the myth that red cars are faster and sportier.”  In doing so, it builds up the suspense of the sentence and puts the last clause in closer proximity to the subject.
  2. Rhythm.  Both this sentence and the one before have the same rhythm (syllables and pauses).  This primes the reader’s brain for the next sentence about music, which has a lot to do with rhythm.
  3. My eyes are blue
  4. Nuclear Emphasis.  As the last words of the final sentence, it emphasizes the clear blue sky, leaving the reader with a positive, picturesque image related to the color blue.

Wall Paint

Your favorite color should change depending on what period in your life you are going through. When I was really little, my favorite color was pink. I think this choice originally had something to do with ballet classes and Hello Kitty. I wore tutus around the house. The white walls of my bedroom were painted a pale pink. After my Grandfather died, I adopted his favorite color: purple. To him, it represented loyalty and royalty, but to me, it represented warmth and security. I moved out of the pale pink room that I shared with my little sister, and I moved into the guest room. I painted the white walls lilac. Towards the end of Middle School, I was extremely close to my mother. Hoping to be like her in every way, I adopted her favorite color scheme: pink and green.1 To my mother, and 80s “prepster” at heart, the combination of the two colors were fun and youthful, but to me, they represented poise and strength, because those are two traits I associate with my mom. Unfortunately, my parents refused to let me paint my walls pink and green. In the seventh grade, I lost my grandmother. She was a spunky woman with a big heart and with big ideas. 2 She never had a favorite color. She was convinced that colors weren’t meant to be ranked or judged, but they were to be enjoyed and appreciated.3 Can you imagine a world without color? That is why your favorite color should be an ever changing decision. It should depend on the day or on what is currently happening in your life. Now, my room is painted sky blue. I’m not really sure why, but I kind of like that there isn’t a reason. One day, not long from now, I’ll move out of my room into a room in a new home. When I get there, I’ll paint my walls a new color.

  1. Periodic sentence: This device builds up suspense and makes the reader wonder how I wanted to be like my mother. It improves the sentence because the beginning grabs the attention of the reader better than a simple sentence could.
  2. Rhythm: “a big heart and with big ideas” The rhythm and repetition in this phrase once again varies the structure of the sentence. Also, it has a sort of sing-song-y effect on the sentence.
  3. Nuclear emphasis: The emphasis in this sentence is on “appreciated”. This adds to the sentence, because it highlights some of the important ideas that my grandmother had.

Eight is Great!

Ever since I was little I always counted on number eight to get me through things. I was born during a blizzard on the eighth of February.  I weighed in at 8 lbs, 8 ounces, so It was destiny that I eight would be lucky for me.  It’s that hope, that excitement, that joy and happiness, that makes my favorite number eight. 1  The roots of my obsession only grew as I got older. When I turned six I used to beg my mom to let me stay up to watch my favorite 8 o’ clock show.  It never let me down. In school I was always assigned the number 8 or 18 at random and in sports I would always go after the number eight jersey. On my eighth birthday it was a Friday and it snowed so hard that I got the day off of school.  I knew the eight would stand for something but I was starting to see why it looked like a snowman, or why ice skaters call it a figure 8. 2 I should have figured that I would grow to love snow and winter.  Whether dialing an 800 number to save yourself from drinking poisonous chemicals or just calling to buy a pillow pet, the number eight is always involved. Maybe it was the VHS movies and tapes that had film  that wrapped in an 8 or the fact that I played with magic eight-balls as a child.  When you turn 18 you are allowed to go clubbing and vote and celebr”eight”.  There are infinite reasons to love the number eight and not just because when it is on its side it means infinity in math but also because it’s out of this world. Even astronomers agreed that eight was good enough when it came down to the removal of Pluto as a planet. What is so lucky about 7? Nothing is lucky about the bombing of Pearl Harbor (on December 7th) or the fact that seven ate nine. Unlike most numbers, eight is symmetrical, so it can be split evenly horizontally and vertically, which creates a sense of balance.  In Chinese Astrology, perfect balance is ideal, which is why eight is considered a lucky number in China.  There is nothing to hate about lucky number eight. 3

  1. Periodic sentence:  I started  a Periodic sentence in the beginning to hook the reader in and to show them what to expect in my essay. Showing the audience why I like the number eight, acts as a tool to persuade them to agree.
  2. Nuclear emphasis:  Here I emphasized the number “8″ to show what it meant to me and how it played a role in my life.  By emphasizing the eight the reader can understand my passion for the snow and the winter months.
  3. Rhythm: This sentence rhymes to leave the essay on a positive note. By making it catchy and memorable the reader can clearly see that eight should be their favorite number too. Rhyming also puts more emphasis on the eight while changing up the rhythm. It does not just have rhythm because it rhymes but because its sentence structure is different from the one before it.  In this sentence I shorten the number of syllables used giving a change in the way the sentence reads compared to the sentences before it.

3, C and 24

There is a collection of two numbers and a letter that may seem entirely random but in fact have served a great purpose in my life. They are, in my opinion, perhaps the greatest group of numbers and letters that exists. 3, C and 24. I’ll start with the letter first. This one is easier to understand in its purpose in my life. With my two letter initials being CC I learned at a young age to love that particular letter after having to write it on school art projects. Thus the curly cursive C that is so wonderful to pen became my favorite letter. Now the love of the number three has in fact been a mystery to myself. Perhaps it’s that C, my favorite letter, is the third letter in the alphabet. Or maybe it came from enjoying darting away whenever someone yelled three in a race. Or even just simply deciding one day it was my favorite letter when asked all those years back and I faithfully stuck by it. In any way I’m not really sure. What I am sure of though is that three is the best number out there, 24 of course being right behind. Luckily the story behind 24 has a little more sense. The day of my birth is on the 24th of the month of November. It may be a little unoriginal to have your second favorite number be the date of your birth but it wasn’t until recently that I had some justification to this. Caught in absolute unawares, breathless in utter astonishment and most pleasantly surprised I came upon the realization that my name composes the same amount of letters as the date of my birth, 24. This of course, was a great finding in my life and quite frankly made my day. Overall I would say I find myself lucky to have the best of all numbers and letters perfectly choreographed into my name and thus being. 3, C and 24, I could never ask for more!

Periodic sentence: 1) “Caught in absolute unawares, breathless in utter astonishment and most pleasantly surprised I came upon the realization that my name composes the same amount of letters as the date of my birth, 24.” 2) By placing the noun “I” near the end and “24” as the final clause following two previous dependent clauses, this creates a periodic sentence. 3) Having this order forces the reader to wait for what caught me by surprise and builds the wanted suspense that makes the sentence more interesting.

Rhythm: 1) “They are, in my opinion, perhaps the greatest group of numbers and letters that exists. 3, C and 24.” 2) By spacing sentences with ten or more syllables in difference beside each other, the first being 22 and the next being five, this creates rhythm. 3) Rhythm here improves the sentences because it allows the reader to pause and puts more emphasis on the short sentence for greater impact.

Nuclear Emphasis: 1) In any way I’m not really sure.” 2) By placing the word “sure” at the end of the sentence it naturally puts nuclear emphasis upon it. 3) The emphasis on the word sure makes the reader sense the actual uncertainty and hesitancy about how it came to that conclusion.
